The Pool in the Wood
I wish I had known the pool in the woods
From the very first day she looked clear at the sky;
I would have met all the woodland creatures
Who have taken gently from her water
And she would have taught me all their names.
I miss most when her caressing coolnessÂ
makes glad the hot heavy heat of summer
But also when in autumn our return to dust
Is dressed in flashing joy and smoldering hope
And even in winter, armored in ice, crowded in snow
The same green peace steadies gray skies unseen.
Spring beyond words turns tears into laughterÂ
And crinkles eye corners in blossoming smiles
I wish I had known the pool in the woods
I would have felt love every day of my life.
